Winter in the Country

Below zero for days, the thermometer hovers between 20 and l0 below zero.  Maybe once or twice it reached four degrees below these last few days.

This is mountain country and folks here have a lot to talk about.  Such as, frozen pipes.  That’s a favorite topic.  Whether the freeze is in a copper pipe (these have good reliability until they become worn and the best now is Tex) under a cupboard or in a toilet.

No wonder our pioneer ancestors hated winter and having to face the outdoor privy.

The wood piles start melting away as fast as the logs can be shoveled into the stove.  Here at the Lazy Bee, the Blaze King has chewed up a cord of the best tamarack Bud has cut.

Folks are lucky to know a neighbor who will help stoke the fire is you have to go away for more than twelve hours.  Thanks to Fred Hauflin.  He is coming down two miles from his mountain top home for three times in the next two days to put wood in the fire for us.

Everything is S.L.O.W.  It takes forever to gird up the loins to go out to fish something out of a freezer.  Just thinking about an outside job takes energy.

A favorite parlor game is for each person to name how many items of clothing he or she has on.  These numbers can be in the 12-20 range.

Ah, that’s winter in the country.

There at the base of a mountain, I live in a rustic cabin with my engineer/writer husband and loving cat, Alfie. I am a former journalist and pr consultant. In my blog I attempt to capture a sliver of WW history, the Lebensborn program to create a Master Race, and to add newsworthy tidbits which are 'somewhat' relevant to this subject.
